I don’t talk a lot about my art except for when I’m having an art show. I don’t know why this is as I enjoy telling people about the piece when they first see it and ask what inspired it. I love talking about my art and really like seeing people connect to individual pieces. Everyone sees something different than what I intended, or they see something in it that I missed and it’s always a wonder hearing what the person sees. To that end, I’ve decided to talk about my art more.
Like a lot of people, I’ve been having to deal with a lot. I’m neurodivergent and AUDHD. I have the regular stresses that everyone has like a family member who is ill, a friend going through a crisis, work and life stresses and everything in between that go along with being a human being. I also live with Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis and depression, so having a lot to deal with is multiplied to A LOT. I’ve been losing sight of myself, and the depression has been hitting me really hard lately.
Rather than up my antidepressants again, I’ve been trying to find myself in my art and my writing. I painted on Wednesday night. The plan in my head was a bright green background with sort of an abstract self-portrait in lines and colours. I wanted to remind myself that the light came from within myself as well as around me. The black at the bottom of the canvas was supposed to show that I had risen above the darkness.
Then I went to put some bronze paint coming from inside the shape of my head and it just mucked the whole thing up. I tried making the whole face bronze, but the minimalist look I was going for was gone. I liked it but didn’t love it and I had squeezed out a lot of paint; it would have been a shame to waste all of it. I walked away from the green painting and made myself dinner to give myself time to think.
The whole point of the painting had been to lift my spirits. I had broken down crying in the kitchen the night before. I had been kneeling on the floor looking for a can of soup and I just sat there and cried. There was no particular reason for the tears, I was just full. The tears came unbidden, but I let them fall. As I kneeled there on the floor, I thought of what I could do. I had to let it all the emotions out before the emotions drowned me.
So, I painted it over. I used a paint roller to see what I would end up with and then made my background. I figured that since I already knew that light came from within me, I could paint something else, something that would make me look up, above the line of the water that is/was getting higher and higher. I was surprised that the painting had been so green before, but now it was a muddled dark red. I really liked how the hue changed with the green and metallic paint underneath.
I painted the flowers randomly, just feeling it and playing with the balance of colour and tone. I was listening to the album Hazel Eyes by Sam Smith while I was painting and let myself fill up with love for myself as I worked. If you haven’t listened to the album, please do so. It’s a wonderful love letter to love and self-love, grief and longing. I painted and lost myself a little in the act of painting. When I was done, I was happier and lighter than I had been before.
Afterwards, I looked at the painting and realized that I’d painted something to lose myself in if the world around me became too much. I decided to call the painting Above It All in hopes that it will help me look outward instead of within.
(I should note that it is available for sale as are all my paintings. Shameless plug over.)
I
am convinced
that when I
was sculpted out of
the clay that is my
body, mirrors were sprinkled liberally within
the darkness of myself, until the bits
of silver came to the surface of who
I was. Often, I find myself wondering if the
artist who made me has been trying to communicate with
me all this time in morose code. While I’ve
been so busy picking out all my imperfections,
the artist was trying to tell me
that I was beautiful. After all,
they had given me a
mirror so that I
could see myself
completely and
shine.
Lixie Bi Bennet is an artist in need of a life.
When she is left her great aunt Aurora’s little house located in Dildo Newfoundland, it seems like her prayers are answered. Lixie piles everything into their dilapidated old car, as well as her five closest friends, drive across Canada to Dildo to take ownership of the bright yellow house. She doesn’t know what she will find there, but it has to be better than the life she is living right now.
Full of hope for what the future, Lixie is keen to get her art business on the map. She makes glass dildos of the highest quality. How perfect will it be to make dildos in Dildo Newfoundland? What she isn’t keen on is some of the locals. Almost as soon as they arrive, Lixie meets D’Arcy, a rich and entitled man who, for some reason she can’t fathom, sets her teeth on edge and her heart into rapid fire. Is it possible to hate and want a person at the same time? Lixie is intent on disliking him on principle.
And he’s not the worst of it. A man named Wilco Collins shows up and lays claim to the house, claiming that he is the rightful owner. He’s even more insufferable than D’Arcy. He is pompous, arrogant, rude and believes he is entitled to everything that he wants. He also makes a move on Lixie with the thought that women should be quiet and do what they are told. He has no idea who he is messing with and Lixie knows that she will have her hands full making herself as distasteful as possible to Collins.
Lixie was hoping that life in Dildo Newfoundland would be simpler. She has no idea how chaotic her life is about to become. Thankfully, as she gets to know the town of Dildo Newfoundland, she begins to finally know herself. But does she have what it takes to survive the growing affections of D’Arcy?
Only time will tell but time is something they are quickly running out of.
I love Jane Austen, but I love tributes to her work even more. I’m thinking of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Dawn of the Dreadfuls and Dreadfully Ever After. When I head about Pride and Provocateur by Melissa Yi, I was hooked right away.
I hoped that it would be a good romp within the world of Jane Austen with the occasional bit of Canada peppered throughout the novel. However, Pride and Provocateur is so much more. Melissa Yi has taken the storyline of Pride and Prejudice and made it something entirely her own. The story is full on Canadiana, and it is glorious.
All of Melissa Yi’s strengths are what make Pride and Provocateur so incredible. The world of Newfoundland comes to life and those that are familiar with the province will recognize certain sights and sounds. She creates amazing character that felt like my friends by the time I finished the novel and you root for them all to find their happily ever for now. I laughed, cried and hoped as I read this book. Pride and Provocateur takes you on a roller coaster of a journey and I for one am changed by it.
That’s the mark of good writing, when a writer can take the plot of a book I know so well and yet they go beyond that to create something their own. Melissa Yi has written something akin to perfection. I can’t wait to read this book again and fall in love with Newfoundland, Lixie and D’Arcy all over again.
I have been trying to untie myself,
letting my mind gently unravel
as I try to find out
who I am.
Delving into the forest of
string, yarn, and pieces of ribbon
that has piled at my feet like water,
I grab hold of a thread
as if it were a touchstone,
something to bring me back outside myself.
This isn’t the first time that I’ve done this;
the unravelling fills the rooms of my mind
and I almost got lost within
when this started.
Each time I come back to the surface,
letting the unraveled string and pieces of yarn

away from my body,
like water or wind,
I take a breath as if for the first time.
Looking down at the palm of my left hand,
I hold another piece of thread,
yarn or string with a pretty bead,
made of plastic or pearl or a bit of glass.
Looking down at this gift,
I wonder what part of myself
will unravel
next.

I am so excited!
